An 18th Sustainable Development Goal

A new campaign urges the UN to add an 18th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) focused on “Universal and Sustainable Space Development.” This SDG would support achieving the current 17 SDGs by expanding human life and activities beyond Earth, ensuring a sustainable future for all.

Africa and the Dreams of Space

In an era defined by information and discovery, Africa emerges as the cradle of humanity’s origin and a promising player in the future of space exploration, as illustrated by the recent Nexus Nairobi event. While Africa faces resource challenges in space exploration, its diverse and energetic population is eager to connect its ancient past to a prosperous future. The vastness of space offers opportunities for collaboration and collective progress, emphasizing the need for Africa’s active involvement. The continent should prioritize investing in space-focused education to prepare for the 100 Year Starship project and reap the benefits of space exploration knowledge. Africa’s diverse identity and rich history hold untapped potential for contributing to the global space exploration effort.

A Seat at the Table

As a member of the Oneida Nation, part of the Iroquois Confederacy, Hawk knows all too well what a colonial mindset can bring forth, because his ancestors experienced it firsthand. He fervently hopes that Indigenous involvement in the space industry will mitigate the harm that would be done by an exploitative approach to the solar ecosystem

If We Stay Home

We don’t often think of ourselves, of humanity, as a species, but that is what we are, the product of billions of years of evolution on a small planet at the edge of a galaxy in an immense universe.

As a species, we face a decision, one that has been long in coming, but now stares us in the face and cannot be avoided.

The Future Has Arrived

Recently, Rhonda Stevenson, President and CEO of Above: Space Development Corporation, suggested that I talk with Andre Bormanis and Dan Hawk as part of this blogging series. What a delightful conversation it was! Andre is a member of OAC’s Board of Advisors and is a science consultant for the Star Trek inspired show, The Orville. Dan was featured in a previous blog that I wrote, called “A Seat at the Table.” He is a member of the Oneida Nation, part of the Iroquois Confederacy, and founder of the United First Nations Planetary Defense.

We Choose to Go to the Moon…

If the Artemis mission eventually succeeds, it will be another milestone in humanity’s evolution into the cosmos. It could also mark the beginning of a movement from mission to migration, and a recognition that space exploration above all else benefits the Earth.
